On Wednesday, Housepitality welcomes (yet another) house legend, Chicago’s Boo Williams. Born Willie Griffin, Boo Williams was in his teens during the explosion of Chicago house music, and began spinning records in the late 80s and producing house music in the early 90s, with his first release coming in 1993 on the Djax label.

We managed catch up with Boo during his busy touring schedule to ask him a few questions. Here it is: the (brief) Housepitality interview… humble words and real talk from a true house legend.

When it comes to producing house music and djing, where do you find inspiration?

I get my Inspiration from other great producers from the past and further. It’s to many to name but I will throw a few out there for you: Gil Scott Heron, Patrick Adams and Leroy Burgess, Gamble and Huff, George Duke, Glenn Underground, Pat Metheny, Stevie Wonder, The Jackson 5, Vince Montana, Marvin Gaye,The 5 Stairsteps, and just Blues, Funk, Jazz, Jazz Fusion, and Soul.

Is it nice to be living in Chicago again? What did you miss the most while you were living in Texas?

Chicago is home but Texas was a very nice place to live..i got peace of mind and met some Great Djs and producers..and I just loved their scene.

Can you talk about the state of house music and technology? Where do you fall when it comes to traditional methods and adopting new ones?

Well I don’t get off in to that part of it, cause I humble myself..so I don’t fall anywhere. I just do what I love and try to pass it on to the next breed.

What is your favorite restaurant in SF? How about Chicago?
I don’t have a favorite restaurant..because I don’t come to SF that much. There are very few people that bring me to play SF.

What is your current favorite record? Producer? Label?
Strictly Jaz Unit Muzic..aka SJU Muzic

Can you tell us about any upcoming production projects / collaborations that you’re excited about?
Well, just be on the look out because they are coming!

There you have it folks. As he says in the interview, he doesn’t come to SF often, and not nearly often enough to have a favorite restaurant here, so do not miss this chance to see a real legend with a crowd of folks who truly appreciate and understand house music.

————————————————————————————————————————-

( ( ( ( (H O U S E P I T A L I T Y) ) ) ) ) continues on its mission to bring the best in real house music from the originators, with this exclusive set from one of Chicago’s greatest, and a bonus backroom birthday set from one of SF’s finest:

::BOO WILLIAMS (Strictly Jazz Unit, Relief Records | Chicago)::

With opening sets by

::FIL LATORRE (Housepitality, Staple | SF)::
::LUROB (Om Records, Great Lakes Audio | San Francisco)::

Groove Lounge:

::SAMMY D (PillowTalk, Wolf+Lamb, [KONTROL], | San Francisco)::
**birthday set!**

It’s May. The weather is getting warmer, more skin is showing in the streets, and folks are getting itchy with the desire to make moves, to strap on those boogie shoes, and get down. We’re here to help.

On this Wednesday, we’ve booked yet another artist who’s been influential in house music’s history: Boo Williams. Boo Williams (born Willie Griffin) grew up in the early 80s club scene in Chicago. While still a teenager, he was exposed to the roots of Chicago house music, and though he began making house music as early as 1987, his tracks first hit wax in 1993 on the Djax label. Since then, he’s released music on many of the foundation house labels, (Rush Hour, Nite Life Collective, Relief, etc.), and has been a mainstay for true house heads and DJs ever since. We’re proud to bring him out to SF and provide an audience who appreciates real, solid, true, Chicago house music.

Opening up, SF’s Lurob. Lurob, aka Louis Roberto, is an accomplished producer and DJ, whose tracks have been played by deep house gods like Mark Farina on their studio-released mixes. With influences as diverse as hip hop, samba, house, and techno, expect a deep, eclectic warmup set.

Following Lurob, our resident Fil Latorre will continue to up the ante. Fil’s a true veteran in our midst, having first started DJing in the same year that Boo Williams first released a record. With regard to throwing parties, DJing, working a room, and creating classic sounds, Fil is a top choice. Fil is a DJ’s DJ, influenced by many genres, and his sets often encompass sounds outside the spectrum of pure house and techno. Opening sets are a great way to experience Fil’s expansive sound. Get here early. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.

Finally, our friend and SF party starting co-conspirator, Sammy D, will be celebrating his birthday in the Groove Lounge with a very special birthday set. If you don’t know Sammy (which is unlikely), he’s been DJing and throwing parties in SF since time immemorial. As a resident at the city’s famed [KONTROL] parties, he and the rest of the Kontrol crew brought just about every house and techno DJ of note to the famous EndUp nightclub, firmly putting his stamp on the history of underground music in this city. Eventually, with friends Ryan Williams and (Housepitality founder) Michael Tello, he began recording and touring as PillowTalk, gaining international success and notoriety, with funk and soul-inspired recordings, and a unique hybrid live-electronic live set.

Sammy’s reached big heights with electronic music, and we’re very happy to host his birthday set back home, with the SF family in attendance. Let’s do this right. Hugs and gentle birthday spanking are encouraged!

Boo Williams

A Chicago club regular in the early ’80s when he was in his early teens, Boo Williams began recording house in 1987, though he didn’t appear on vinyl until 1993, on Holland’s Djax label. Williams is a main producer for Cajmere’s Relief label, where he also records his own material. Boo Williams spent the first decade plus of his career putting together a hefty catalogue, releasing on classic US labels like Nite Life Collective, Rhythm Republic and Relief Records, the latter of which released the producer’s first two LPs, including Home Town Chicago.

*******************************************************

Fil Latorre

Fil Latorre is a San Francisco-based DJ, prodcuer and event promoter that has been djing since 1993. His skills as a dj have garnered him high praise and critical acclaim. Less than a year after buying his first record, he won the first annual Fever/Buzz Battle of the DJs in Batlimore, Maryland, sparking critics and contemporaries alike to refer to him as a natural. Fil soon became a staple at events all over the country and Canada, playing at raves and clubs alike for various promoters in the Americas including the U.S., Canada, Mexico and Colombia, South America.

Among other residencies, in 1995, Fil co-founded the Dirty Crew with DJ’s David Javate and John-Michael. Together, the Dirty Crew coordinated one-off events featuring DJs such as Robbie Hardkiss, Scott Henry and Terry Mullan to name a few. The Dirty Crew moved on to establish their weekly party, Filtered at the Eighteenth Street Lounge’s now defunct, club Red. Filtered went on for almost 3 years and has been heralded as one of the best weekly underground club nights in DC’s history.

After djing on the West Coast multiple times where Fil received his best response, In 1999, he packed all his studio gear and records and moved to San Francisco. 5 months later, Fil co-founded Staple, along with Michael ‘Inhuman’ Minnich, Tony Roam and Jeff Brillhart. Staple was a weekly Saturday night event that showcased national and international talent like Glenn Underground, Alton Miller, Boo Williams, Stacey Pullen, Dan Bell, Layo & Bushwacka!, Jori Hulkonnen, Common Factor, John Tejada, Jeno, JT Donaldson, Lance DeSardi, Mark Ambrose, Alexi Delano and many more. After a 55 week run, staple – the weekly – called it quits.

That same year, Fil began working for a vinyl distribution company called tRC Distribution as their House/Techno buyer and reviewer.

In 2001, Fil reunited with David Javate to throw the monthly party Staple:Refuge at San Francisco’s famous house music mecca, the EndUp. Refuge brought back many of the guests from the original staple, and more. Staple went on at the EndUp for a little over a year.

Fil has been passionate about music all his life, from when he studied violin and piano during grade school through studying music theory at the University of Virginia and finally becoming an Audio Engineer. The next logical step being production, Fil has been working on original work for years, which he regularly plays in his dj sets.

His creations and live performance influences range from underground Hip-Hop to Samba and Funk, while his original works and DJ sets take listeners on journeys of House and Techno stapled with the musical influences of his rich history that isn’t lost on the dancer.

Lurob’s first release “Dubalicious” was featured as the opening track on Mark Farina’s “House of Om” mix; since then he has collaborated with various genre acclaimed artists such as Miles Maeda, Wally Callerio, JR from Dallas, and Alessandro Arbola.
Sammy D

Sammy D has been a fixture in the San Francisco house and techno scene for the past 12 years. From his early days as a resident at the famed house club “The Top”, to his production collaborations with Dirtybird Justin Martin, all the way to his massive monthly [KONTROL] parties at the legendary EndUp, Sammy has had a firm hand in helping shape the music scene in the Bay Area for over a decade.

Having today manned the decks for close to 17 years, it’s Sammy’s DJ sets that really separate him from most artists out there. He has that perfect balance of technicality, patience, and understanding of what to play at the right time. He can really read a crowd, which, coupled with his highly entertaining personality, has made for some of the most unforgettable and legendary sets San Francisco has had the joy of experiencing.

Sammy has played with just about every major DJ in the world through his [KONTROL] and LoveLetters events, but the time has clearly come for him to step out from behind the decks and into the spotlight with his refreshing new productions with PillowTalk. Quite promisingly, their first production has already been signed to Seth Troxler and company’s hot new label VisonQuest and a follow up LP’s on the upstart Life and Death, Wolf + Lamb and Kompakt. Stay tuned, and watch for big things in the near future, because we’ve clearly only cracked the surface of this one-of-a-kind talent.

::CLINT STEWART (Safeword, Mobilee, Bad Animal, Poker Flat | SF)::
::CZ BOOGIE (5 Mag, Smart Bar, Grandbar, Untouchables | Chicago)::

Groove Lounge:

::B Majik (SF)::
::Victor Vega (Housepitality | SF)::

As usual, Housepitality has scouted far and wide, beyond the borders of the continental US (this time all the way to Hawaii) in order to find the finest techno and house music for our fans, this time by bringing a debut performace from a breakout new talent: Dayjob.

When true partiers on the island state want to hear the best house and techno music from the hottest acts in the biz, they know exactly where to go: the Asylum afterhours. Located in Honolulu, Asylum is an exclusive members-only affair, offering members the chance to see the world’s best talent in an quality underground atmosphere. As is often the case with parties such as these, the resident DJs, working hard and refining their talents week after week, end up growing larger than the confines of their home, and break through to the world stage: that’s what’s happened here. Dayjob is the production alias of Asylum residents Loic Tambay and Willis Haltom, two DJs who have separately had releases out on Get Physical, Dirtybird, and Surface recordings.

On this Labour Day (Americans may have to look this up), Housepitality has rounded out our lineup with some of the hardest working DJs from our home cities of SF and Chicago. Clint Stewart needs no introduction. With his production/DJ duo Safeword (with Marc Smith), he’s had music released on some of the biggest and baddest labels of the moment (Mobilee, Bad Animal, Poker Flat, to name a few), and has already become a household name in the minds of the worldwide techno elite. Clint’s talents as a DJ and producer are simply undeniable, and we’re lucky to get a chance to host him once again.

Finally, rounding out the lineup, Chicago’s CZBoogie, aka Czarina Mirani. CZBoogie has was initially an actor and dancer, albeit one who harbored an obsession for house music. Eventually turning to DJing, she was influenced by the cream of the crop of Chicago’s house icons, and eventually she went on to start 5 Mag, America’s only music magazine entirely devoted to house music. She holds residencies at several of Chicago’s most tasteful house clubs (Smartbar and Grandbar, among others), and is now a house heavyweight among heavyweights, coming as she does from one of house’s homelands. We’re honored to bring her to our professional midweek house crew.

In the Groove Lounge, B Majik, and Housepitality’s own Victor Vega, will keep things on a funky, slightly slower tip.

Dayjob is the production alias of Willis Haltom and Loic Tambay. Resident djs at the internationally known asylum afterhours in Honolulu, they respectively had remixes on Get physical, Dirtybird, and Halo’s Surface recordings. The future looks very bright with more original music coming out on the newly founded Asylum Confidential label and remixes for various others.

Loic Tambay
With residencies at the island’s newest after-hours club Asylum, and the posh Lotus Soundbar, located in the heart of Waikiki, and with increasing international bookings, this up and coming talent is definitely a name to look out for.
Willis Haltom
Over the course of the last 10 years Willis Haltom has been able to play with some of the biggest names in Dance music from around the Globe. Whether it is Josh Wink, The Crystal Method, or Claude Von Stroke, Willis has been able to hold his own amongst dance music’s heavy weights. Since Moving to Hawaii 6 years ago he has really been able to influence what kind of sound people are hearing on the islands, first with his first residency at NextDoor in Honolulu and next with the opening of his club, Asylum Afterhours. Since opening Asylum with his partners he has been able to play with some of dance music’s most exciting and forward thinking producers. Names like Troy Pierce, DJ T., Justin Martin, Pan Pot, Lee Foss, Heartthrob, Droog, Bill Patrick, Tim Green, Tanner Ross, Sian, have all graced the decks and Willis has been blessed to play with them as well. 2010 was a breakout year for Willis, which included playing dates at Spybar in Chicago, 222 Hyde and the Endup in San Francisco, and the famed Culprit Sessions parties atop the Standard hotel in Los Angeles. With more focus in 2011 on production and continued enthusiasm towards the scene and djing in Honolulu keep your eyes on this rising talent.

Clint Stewart

In just under five years Clint Stewart has carved out a reputation as a rising musical talent gaining accolades with a growing catalogue of charismatic productions and diverse DJ sets. Since a breakout set at San Franciscos Lovefest in 2007 acclaim has been mounting worldwide for Clint as a DJ, producer and as part of an elite group of core artists holding a residency at one of the most desired destinations in the States, 222 Hyde.

Clints captivating DJ sets can go from deep and moody to heavy and twisted. While consistently maintaining a foundation in dynamics and range, the music always celebrates the diversity of people, music and environment encountered. His reputation has placed him at the world-renowned Dance Under the Blue Moon radio show with Anja Schneider as well as acclaimed Berlin clubs including Tresor, Arena Club, Bar 25, and Watergate – where he closed the night by rocking into the afternoon with an 8 hour set at the opening party for the 2010 Love Parade.

Clints productions speak of a similar style and range. His solo work as well as Safeword, a recent project with production partner Marc Smith, immerses you in an extensive palette of sounds. With Safewords engaging live set, a current release on Paso Music that is getting widespread play from DJs worldwide and upcoming releases on Berlin giant Poker Flat all signs point to exciting things to come for the duo. Solo remixes on Mexican label Pantamuzik, Belgium imprint Sirius Pandi, and collaborations with Alland Byallo on Amam and a debut solo ep on Byallos forthcoming label Bad Animal all suggest a dynamic artist with an ear to the future.

( ( ( ( (H O U S E P I T A L I T Y) ) ) ) ) is bringing it all back home with a lineup honoring SF’s amazing talent (even those who have moved away), with DJ sets from our founder, a birthday set from our friend and colleague, and a main room set from our back room guru:

::MICHAEL TELLO (Touch Of Class, PillowTalk, Housepitality | NY)::
**Farewell, leaving-to-NYC set**

::DJ SEVEN (Lo-Rise Recordings, Sofa, Qi Lounge, Chambers) | SF):: [Special birthday set]

::MIKE BEE (Vinyl Dreams | SF)::

Groove Lounge:

::Ray Zuniga (Touch Of Class, Signal Flow | Berlin)::

For this edition of Housepitality, we’re bringing back our founder, Michael “Mikey” Tello, to cap off a night of all-local (or formerly-local) talent. Mikey is one of SF’s greatest musical success stories. Originally from southern California, Mikey made SF his home, and, through years of throwing parties, DJing, and producing music, eventually used this city as a launchpad to an internationally successful career in music. As part of the band PillowTalk, along with Ryan Williams and Sammy D, Mikey’s musical talent was finally displayed to a worldwide audience. The next step after successfully touring internationally was starting a label, and Mikey wasted no time in beginning his label “Touch Of Class Records,” along with his friend and musical partner Ray Zuniga. Having since moved to New York in order to further his ambitions, Mikey is back in town, and is the clear choice to headline this night.

DJ Seven (aka Sean Evans) has been mastering the art of DJing for over 24 years. He’s a professional DJ, as hardworking as any in SF (perhaps more so), and has learned an encyclopedic amount about all genres of music, not just house. Sean also worked with Michael Tello back in 2007 to start Love It Wednesdays at Icon Lounge (now F8), which was the precursor to the Housepitality parties we know and love today. Sean has always supported us, and house music in SF in general, and he’s going to play a very special birthday set. Come by to wish him a happy birthday and see what 24 years of DJing talent looks like. Professional.

Opening up the main room is Mike Bee (who’s usually found holding down the Groove Lounge aka back room). We try never to go more than a month without having Mike play for us, and there’s a reason for that: he’s an amazing DJ with a enviously deep collection of vinyl. Mike used to be a record buyer for the famous Amoeba record store, and currently spends his time DJing, collecting music, and running an online record shop known as Vinyl Dreams ( http://on.fb.me/X8h3Sh ). Mike has always exceeded expectations when he has played for us, oftentimes even outperforming our headlining DJs, and causing our little back room to be uncomfortably packed. On this night, we’re having him open the main room, where he can showcase a different side of his record collection for us. Come early, grab some free champagne, and come check out a set you won’t normally hear from Mike at Housepitality.

Finally, in the back room, we have Ray Zuniga, who is Michael Tello’s production/DJ partner (as the duo Signal Flow), and also the co-owner of their Touch Of Class label. Ray also moved away to further his musical career, and while he’s back in town, we’ve nabbed him to hold down the back room.

Michael Tello

Michael Tello was born in Hollywood California in 1978. The son of Latin parents with an eclectic taste in music, he was exposed to a wide variety of genres, ranging from the tribal rhythms of South America to the cutting edge, electronic sounds of the early 1980′s. At age 12, Michael’s dad Galo, purchased a DJ set up with turntables, mixer & microphone and asked him to hook it up. After the difficult but intriguing task Michael had found a new interest and love for the art of DJing. He began experimenting with his mom and dads Disco, Salsa and Funk 12” records and 45’s and has been rocking the decks ever since.
At one of his dads legendary house parties in the early 90’s Michael’s cousin gave him a mix tape simply labeled “HOUSE”, he remembers playing it and loving the repetitive Disco / Alternative rhythms and seeing his older cousins and family dance all night. Soon after he decided to check out his local record store and picked up his first 12” records. He started collecting a wide variety of House, Techno, Breaks, Hip Hop and Freestyle. His Junior High had a small DJ program that he joined and began spinning at school dances and local house parties. In High School he was a back up DJ for a 5-person rap group and started to MC himself. That summer he went to a couple of all age club nights and also checked out his first Rave. Inspired by the vibe and energy he decided to start his own crew Circuit Productions, and throw his first underground event when he was only 16. After producing a handful of successful parties the crew parted ways to peruse their own separate dreams. Michael went on to DJ for several promoters, undergrounds, festivals, and club events in and around the LA area. He credits his fine tuned mixing and scratching skills to watching and observing some of his mentor’s Doc Martin, Mark Farina, Little Louie Vega and DJ Dan.
In 1997 before his 18th birthday he took a trip with his friends up to San Francisco so he could experience what all the hype was about. At a legendary Sunset party in the park, he danced to the most amazing House music he had ever heard, and at that moment decided he had found his new home. Shortly after moving to San Francisco he attended the Academy of Art College and studied graphic design. Once in SF he quickly engaged himself by assisting as sound engineer at KUSF’s college radio for a show called “Future Breaks FM” and also sound engineered for SF’s leading Drum & Bass weekly, Eklectik. This brought new opportunities for gigs and helped him make connections in the House community. In 1999 he partnered up with Ramiro Gutierrez and founded “Uniting Souls” a production company that has organized over 700 shows in the US, expanding from San Francisco, Seattle, New York, Miami and Los Angeles, and transformed into one of Seattle’s leading House Record labels. Since his arrival to SF Michael has given back to the community by working as an Outreach Health Worker for youth AIDS and Pregnancy prevention and also founded a DJ/Music Production program for kids 12-18 at the YMCA in SF’s Tenderloin district for under privileged youth. In 2000 he attended Expression’s Center for New Media and got his degree in Audio Engineering. After graduating he interned for Om Records, one of San Francisco’s leading independent labels were he quickly learned the ropes and moved up under the wing of Ryan Raddon (aka Kaskade) and took the torch as Om’s A&R and Production Manager for 2 years. His first remix for King Kooba got lots of play and received great reviews, he followed that with “Barrio Beats” a Latin Down-tempo track that was licensed to Sex in The City, Playboy Mansion PS2 video game and numerous world wide compilations. In 2001 Michael started his own bootleg record label, X-Men Project, with production partner Gilad Gershoni. The label had a few releases but gained worldwide recognition by DJ’s and distributors. Till this day the XMP releases remain timeless and collectors items. He continues to release and DJ for Om Records after leaving the company in 2002 to focus on his music, label and event productions.
His experience comes from collaborating and working with successful companies such as Uniting Souls, Om Records, Flavorgroup, Stompy.com, Gravity Point, Gemini Records and Deepfunk Records. In 2007 he started MVP Entertainment a new company with his fiancé Vanessa Spears. MVP ran one of San Francisco’s leading Wednesday night weekly parties at the Icon Ultra Lounge that featured two rooms of House, Techno, Hip Hop, Old School, Freestyle, Funk and Soul music. After a 2-year run they decided to rap it up on a good note and focused on larger events. Michael spent a lot of 08’ and 09’ managing fundrais- ers for his Burning Man camp, Gravity Point, a collective of 50 people who organized a giant stage at Burning Man for 4 years. Each fundraiser would draw around 800 people and rose close to $15,000 for the camp and are remembered in the SF underground scene.
Michael’s primary music selection ranges from House, Techno, Tech House and Electro. The music he produces can be described as an intelligent blend of House and Latin Jazz fused with deep, soulful, sexy and funky rhythms. Performing mostly as a solo DJ, Michael also tag teams as “Shook Night” with OM Record’s Rob Grega, and “Dawn-a-Tello” with SF’s favorite girl DJ, Dawn of Sound. From time to time you will also see Michael Djing along side live brass instruments, percussions, guitarists and vocalists. To date, Michael has produced well over 30 songs for various record labels such as OM Records, Bombay, XMP, Cadang, Bootshine, Gemini Records and Deepfunk Records. Michael currently lives in Los Angeles with his fiancé and closer to his family where he’s launched his own digital label and podcast, Mai Music. Only 31 and with 19 years experience as a DJ, 13 years producing and 15 years experience throwing managing, and hosting events, skies the limit for this hard working talented soul.

( ( ( ( (H O U S E P I T A L I T Y) ) ) ) ) is proud to welcome a new voice to our weekly, with the producer of RA’s track of the year, and an opening set from one of our favorite back room maestros:

::ANDRÉS (Slum Village, Mahogani, La Vida | Detroit)::
::JOEL CONWAY (Black Pancake | San Francisco)::

Groove Lounge:

::TYREL WILLIAMS (Acid Test, Housepitality | SF/CHI)::

“I learned how to scratch before I learnt how to mix, and being a percussionist I take great pride in my scratching, I tell people I’m a hip-hop DJ but I don’t just play hip-hop.” – Andrés

In the Resident Advisor “Track of the Year” editor’s poll, there could be only one #1 track, and in 2012, the honor went to Detroit’s Andrés (aka DJ Dez Andres) for his track “New For U,” which we can guarantee you’ve heard at some point during the last year.

Though he’s been making “classically-informed house, soul, hip-hop and funk” since 1997, he hasn’t gained nearly as much name-recognition as his key supporter Moodymann, who is his closest contemporary. Born to a famed Detroit jazz musician father (Humberto ‘Nengue’ Hernandez), he got his first drum set at 3 years of age, and was steeped in the rich Motor City musical scene. He worked in the same record store in Detroit that Kenny Dixon Jr. (aka Moodymann) worked in, and became a committed master of crate-digging at a very early age.

Andrés has been called a “Don of house and hip hop.” He was recruited by J Dilla to DJ for Dilla’s hip hop crew Slum Village, and is only now reaping the respect accorded to an artist with this kind of pedigree, in the worlds of both underground house music and hip hop. It is this mixing of genres, bringing the hip hop sensibilities of J Dilla, to the realm of house music (a la Moodymann) that makes this a show not to be missed.

Opening up for Andrés is our friend and once-monthly Groove Lounge guest, Joel Conway, aka Leo Jay. Joel is usually recruited by us to play the back room, because we know that his deep, deep record collection, astounding knowledge of music (of all genres), his trained ear, and his amazing attitude, are a win-win-win-win for us. We’ve never been disappointed by his music, in the front room or the back, and we thought he would be the perfect fit to open for Andrés with a 3 hour set. Make sure to come early for free champagne, and to hear what he will do to shape the crowd, warm the dance floor, and prepare for a night of music like no other at Housepitality.

Finally, our resident Tyrel Williams will be playing a back room Groove Lounge set for us, rounding out an evening of deep crate diggers. Tyrel’s record collection is as deep and enviable as those of Andrés and Joel, and his knowledge of music runs just as deep, making him a perfect fit to round out this night.

Tyrel Williams

Tyrel has been a mainstay of Chicago’s underground House scene for years. He began mixing records in 1999. Soon later he landed a job at Gramaphone Records where he spent the last decade building a mighty collection of 12” dance records. He spent 2009-2011 building his Acid Test residency at Smart Bar, which is an ongoing all vinyl House / Techno weekly dedicated to the true art form of DJing. Guests have included Miles Maeda, Derrick Carter, Tevo Howard, Traxx, and Justin Long. Tyrel has recently moved to San Francisco where he is a resident DJ for Housepitality and has also started his Acid Test party with Bryan Bai-ee and Miguel Solari.

( ( ( ( (H O U S E P I T A L I T Y) ) ) ) ) is proud to host the last SF set for our colleague and brother-in-arms, as he makes his transition to Berlin to become even more of a star, and an exclusive Groove Lounge appearance from the mind behind one of the most renowned parties in Los Angeles:

::KEVIN KNAPP (Werd., Leftroom | SF/Berlin)::
**Hybrid DJ/live set**

With support from Knapp’s closest contemporaries, our great friends (and some of the most talented DJs in SF):

::NIKITA (listed | San Francisco)::
::NICK WILLIAMS (Werd. | San Francisco)::

Special Groove Lounge set:

::Mike Bee (Vinyl Dreams | SF)::

April has been a month of goodbyes. On April 3rd, we sent Housepitality founder Mikey Tello off to NYC. This week we are sending off another one of our favorites, Mr. Kevin Knapp, on his way to Berlin. Kevin is one of the most amazing musicians we know. He’s been an instrumental part of one of the most successful and longest-running weekly parties in SF, WERD., and his success, as a DJ, vocalist, producer, and all-around amazing person, has been all-but-assured, to those who have an ear to listen.

Kevin has honored us by having his last SF gig at our party. To make this occasion even more special, we’ve booked some of his greatest friends, his musical contemporaries, Nick Williams, and Nikita, to share in this experience. Nick is a founding member of the WERD party, in addition to being a most accomplished DJ. Although we’re sad that Kevin is leaving, we’re very excited to have this opportunity to have Nick play a set for us.

Nikita (who never stops dropping techno bombs) is a uniquely San Francisco DJ. Originally from Denver, he’s been dropping amazing music in SF and worldwide, as part of the listed family of artists. He’s held a residency at SF’s famous Endup, and is definitely one of the most talented and magnetic personalities to come up out of this talented and magnetic city. As a DJ, no one plays like Nikita does… and we’re happy to have him back.

Finally, last but not least, we’re proud to host an exlusive appearance from Eduardo Castillo. Eduardo is the man responsible for the Voodoo Loft parties in Los Angeles. The Voodoo Loft parties have a simple formula: feature the creme de la creme of house and techno artists in an extremely exclusive and intimate space, all for the love of the music. He’s hosted the best and brightest artists at his parties, and his talent, love of great music in the right environment make him a kindred spirit with us at Housepitality. We’re extremely honored to have him come play a set for us. Come and check him out… you will not be disappointed.

*******************************************************

Kevin Knapp

Kevin Knapp just kicks it, plain and simple. Already a prominent figure in the San Francisco dance music community and a resident for the city’s highly regarded WERD crew, Kevin’s release of “Like This” on the Leftroom label last year catapulted him into the sights of the global dance community. Unable to rest on that track’s success, his collaborative follow up “Stay Glued” on Audiojack’s Gruuv imprint has been a scorcher for many international talents over the first half of this year. It’s being caned by talents such as Jamie Jones, Seth Troxler, Claude Vonstroke, Magda, Eats Everything and many others.

Kevin’s vox are in high demand these days and some of his collaborative projects have involved some of the industry’s most prominent underground talents. Work with Matt Tolfrey, Kate Simko, Audiojack, Inxec, Burnski, Ooft, & Safeword’s Marc Smith have all contributed to Knapp’s contemporary sound. Also, watch out for Kevin as a featured vocalist on Matt Tolfrey’s debut full-length album “Word of Mouth” out in September 2012.

Having played alongside Claude VonStroke, Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson, Inxec, Subban, Lee Curtiss, Audiojack, Bill Patrick, Lee Burridge, Katou and Worthy just to name a few, Kevin is guaranteed to get you grooving on the dance floor.

We’ve reached the final Housepitality of April, a month in which we’ve said goodbye to some of our closest friends (Mikey Tello, Kevin Knapp, Adnan Sharif, to name a few), and so it’s finally time to switch things up, and welcome back an artist who’s been responsible for some of the most amazing parties we have ever thrown, a true DJ’s DJ, Mr. Matt Chicoine, AKA RECLOOSE.

Recloose met Housepitality founder Miguel Solari when they were students at University of Michigan, and when Recloose still went by the DJ name of Bubblicious. Matt/Recloose had become somewhat of a local legend at this time, throwing a Tuesday night weekly, and becoming known for an ambitious, dynamic approach to mixing and music programming, when he was finally discovered by Carl Craig (in an incident known as “demo on rye,” which occurred when he was working at a Detroit deli).

In the intervening years, Recloose moved to New Zealand, and though he’s been far away, geographically, his amazing technical skills, diverse music selections and productions, and drive have made him one of the most popular Detroit transplants on the house and techno scene.

Recloose first appeared for Housepitality in May of 2011. An appearance that went down in history as one of the most bangin’ nights we’ve had…. UNTIL HIS NEXT appearance, last year, at a Housepitality that happened to fall on July 4th, which brought in a record-breaking crowd, and one of the most amazing vibes we’ve ever experienced. We got the chance to book him again this year, for his third visit, and we took it; Recloose’s talents behind the decks are simply amazing, every time… he’s a living DJ lesson, and we couldn’t be happier to have him back.

Supporting Recloose, we’ve brought back Johnnie Walker for another set. Johnnie is no newcomer to the SF scene, having thrown the famous Bionic Sunday parties at the (sadly now defunct) 222 club. The first time he came to play for us, he blew us away with a diverse and powerful opening set, and we’re really excited to hear what he’ll bring this time.

After Johnnie, our CEO, tall guy, and extremely talented, Chicago-trained producer and resident DJ, Bai-ee. If you still haven’t come to see him play, you need to take this chance and get out and hear a set. Every ounce of experience learned through his many years of DJing and throwing parties, comes through in sets that are diverse, deep, and jackin’, all at once.

Finally, in the Groove Lounge, we welcome a local DJ who was raised and trained in many of the dance capitals of the US (Detroit, LA, and now finally, SF): Tom Thump. Tom is known as a svengali of genres, a true genre-blending DJ who can play to just about any crowd, and who, in fact, has played alongside artists from almost as many genres as one can name. He’s exactly the sort of DJ we require in the Groove Lounge, a place where just about any genre goes, as long as it’s groovin’, as long as it’s different, as long as it’s good. We look forward to having this expert take our back room on a journey whose destination is still unknown. Let’s Thump!

Recloose

Fourteen years after his now infamous ‘Demo on Rye’ exchange with Carl Craig in a downtown Detroit sandwich shop, Recloose has developed into a true standout of the city’s musical litter. His inventive and restless output is distinctive and diverse, melding together moody techno, soulful house, synth-heavy jazz, funk and heavy downtempo with the great of ease, and as only he knows how.

With tremendous fanfare, summer 2011 will see the much anticipated release of the first original Recloose music to emerge in three years – the ‘Saturday Night Manifesto’ EP for Rush Hour. The seminal Amsterdam based label last year outed ‘Early Works’, a spine tingling retrospective collection celebrating his best work from the late 90’s and early 00’s.

Additionally, Recloose has to date released a number of groundbreaking 12’s for Planet E and Rush Hour, a host of remixes, and four full-length albums for noteworthy labels !K7, Peacefrog, Octave Lab and Sonar Kollektiv. He has been responsible for several hit singles which remain somewhat hallowed amongst educated heads – namely ‘Cardiology’, (incidentally with a five-star remix from Isolee), ‘Dust’ featuring Joe Dukie, and ‘Can’t Take It’ featuring R’n’B sensation Dwele, later stunningly re-worked by Carl Craig.

A much in-demand DJ, Recloose spent years traversing clubs and festivals around the world, as well as performing as a turntablist for both Carl Craig’s Innerzone Orchestra and the more esoteric Uri Caine ensemble. He has spent much of his last few years recording and playing with his funk-oriented Recloose Live Band, rendering his more house oriented DJ sets a rare treat. Fans can catch him via his ‘Hit It and Quit It’ radio show aired every Monday from Auckland’s George FM (www.hititandquititradio.blogspot.com) – the broadcasts and accompanying blog are sure-fire crate-digging fodder for any self-respecting house head.

This year Recloose resurfaces from his base in Auckland, New Zealand, to once again trail blaze the dancefloors of the US and Europe, with his recent RA Podcast giving listeners a taste of what they can expect from each of his resounding performances.

Evidently despite the name, and luckily for followers the world over, Recloose finds it impossible to stray far from the vanguard of electronic music for too long.
