WORTHY!!! – This is how he rocks SF – Interview by Sean Gallagher

Worthy at Housepitality
Worthy at Housepitality

On August 24st one of our hometown rockers stemming from the Dirtybird crew, Worthy, will be dropping his heat all over the midweek professional crowd at Housepitality. He recently had a set at Adnan Sharif’s Forward underground in early August that blew the roof off and people are still praising weeks later. This night will be hosted by our lovely candy maker and dance music aficionado, Mrs. Lea Camille. Miguel Solari and The Worker will be delivering the opening sets in the front, Rob Grega, Michael Tello and Michael Perry will be in the Slow Groove Lounge. We welcome Kyra Buck, our new back room mixologist bartender, making delicious drinks using Bulleit Bourbon, Barsol Pisco, Hendricks Gin and other top great spirits. Finally we are grateful to feature the world renown artist Greg Pnut Galinsky to decorate our walls this week: http://www.gregpnutgalinsky.com/

WORTHY!!!

Originally from D.C. Worthy has been representing San Francisco since 2001. He is one of the co-conspirators of the Dirtybird movement. He has been very busy lately, jet setting to different cities, playing for many crowds and enjoying the success of his own label called Anabatic which offers dozens or releases as of 2011.

At Housepitality we have noticed that people give us their best performances. Maybe its because anyone willing to come out in full force on a Wednesday night is serious about dance music and our acts want to deliver the best they have to this very special crowd. Well, the response we have from the Worthy event coming up so far is HUGE so this performance will be no different. People are excited to hear what he’s got for us and knowing him, he will not disappoint.

So, we ask, what is Worthy’s secret sauce? What has given him the ability to grab dance floors and tear them to shreds? One of Worthy’s best friends Mr. Sean Gallagher sits down with him and asks these five questions:

1) What can you tell me about your introduction to electronic and dance music. Was there a scene while growing up?

My first interaction with electronic music was an all ages club in Rehoboth beach Delaware when I was about 14/15 years old. I remember them playing some really crazy music. But I did not really find dance music again till I went to college in NYC. That was when I really got into and loved it for the first time. I had a good crew of people to go out to the clubs who knew where to go wich including Justin Martin. I got to hear amazing DJs from all over the world then and hear all kinds of styles from house to techno to drum and bass. It really opened me up musically.

2) I find your sets to be musically diverse but always fitting inside the Worthy universe so to speak. What things do you look for in a track, and conversely try to avoid when selecting music.

My sound tends to have a kind of organic quality too it, so I definitely like a lot of congas and live drums sounds in a track. Overall though I like the tracks I play to have a drive and groove that people can lock into and go with and be psychedelic for a minute. That is really what I think gets the dance floor going. Also some weird sounds in there are also nice too.

3) While in the studio is there a piece of gear or software that you can’t live without?

I guess now it would have to be Abelton and reason. I use those two programs to make all of my music in. I also love my Mackie speakers too.

4) What labels and artists outside of Dirtybird and Anabatic are grabbing your ear this summer?

Some of the labels that I have been really into would be Discoblle, Pets, and Sound Pellegrino. As for artists that have been doing it for me are Kink, Joyce Muniz, Mr Ho., Canblaster, A1 Bassline, and Breach to name a few. Those peeps are dropping some sick tracks these days and cool sounds.

5) What do you like about the scene in San Francisco and what do you wish you could change?

The thing I love most about SF are the people. Everyone here is so supportive and always down to get down and dance there ass off, even if there are not a ton of people at the party yet. It is really amazing and does not happen in every city I go to. The one thing I would love to change is the cut off time for alcohol. 2am is just is not cutting it.

Our headliner’s BIO:
WORTHY (Anabatic, Dirtybird)

Worthy grew up around Washington DC in the early days of Deep Dish, Scott Henry and the early American rave scene. In the late 90’s after moving to New York City, he met good friend Justin Martin and was exposed to the sounds of people like LTJ Bukem, Stacey Pullen and Sasha. These artists greatly influenced his early ear while the expanding dance music scene encouraged him to play records of all genres; from hip hop to breaks to techno and drum ‘n’ bass.
In 2001 Worthy moved to San Francisco. He set up his studio and began producing house and techno music and DJing around the city. He later conspired with Christian Martin, Justin Martin and Claude VonStroke to co-create a fresh take on outdoor parties, rightly named Dirtybird. The Dirtybird parties have quickly become an institution for San Francisco die-hards and a destination for international travelers.
2006 brought the launch of Worthy’s label, Anabatic Records. Originally intended as an outlet for the release of his own music, Anabatic quickly branched out to take on new artists. Anabatic has been providing a steady stream of high quality tech house and has been gaining the praises of top DJs and Producers around the globe for its edgy new sound.
In 2007 Worthy broke out as a producer with his release of Irst_Te? on Dirtybird, Crack EL EP on Leftroom, and Bass Quake and Mummer EP on Anabatic. As well as doing remixes for Curfew, OM, Utensil, and Tentigo records. In 2008 Worthy released his underground hit Work The Walls on his label and its accompanying music video has given fans a glimpse into the la la land of his mind. He followed this up with his Madcap EP and remixes on Lot49, Fresh Meat, and Anabatic. Worthy’s music production has been showing up on DJ charts across the world and has been played by everyone from Carl Cox to Sven Vath to Ben Watt.
With no signs of slowing down in 2009, Worthy has already released the Swing Chord EP on Trapez Ltd, and has teamed up with label mate Yankee Zulu to release the Bad Side EP and BS Connection EP on Playtime records and there huge summer smash hit Concumbia on Anabatic. With plenty more remixes and originals on the way and the continued growth of Anabatic Records, Worthy is set to continue getting everyone working the walls around the world.
