Our dear friend Clint Stewart of Safeword as well as SF’s tech ambassador to the world put together 10 REALLY WELL THOUGH OUT QUESTIONS for Sian that give great insight into the mind of this artist.  Here it is, enjoy:

Sian interview by Clint Stewart:

1. First off, how, where and when did you get into Electronic Music?

mostly through wandering / hanging around old rock studios and music shops in Dublin,(before this i was already obsessed with any music made electronically, italo disco, pop, etc) and had this burning desire to understand the process, from there i gradually begged, stole and borrowed my own setup, and went from big old analogue gear to stripped down, software based setups.

2. You have lived in Dublin, Barcelona and a few other places in the past few years, do you feel that each city has influenced your sound in a different way? If so, how?

yes,i move a lot, always have that gypsy blood racing in my veins! im more influenced by where i am mentally, than geographically, some of my tracks i think sound more like periods in my life than places.

although i do tend to get restless, and do my best work between stages, places or times in my life.

3. Your label, Octopus Recordings, never fails when it comes to delivering some big room bombs. What is your formula for ensuring a consistent and unique sound for the label?

i gues thats just it,the criteria is “hit”,i go solely on my own judgement,.like when i hear a track and thing, fuck thats banging…and it has to be instant.for example, recently when i got the demo from your locals Clint and Marc, it knocked me out,was this mad combo of almost tribal ideas mixed with pure usa techno feeling, these tracks are typical of what catches my ear, that dancefloor working appeal, and that strange, left field vibe.

4. If you could choose only 1 of your productions to play for someone who is unfamiliar with your sound, which one would it be?

id say maybe skeleton, which is very my sound, slow dark and funked up..this was on Dubfires label,(i hadnt established my own yet) but tracks like that or the next one im releasing,Beta Decay, feel like me or my world.

5. So, in your bio your described as an enthusiast of entomology, cosmology, and marine biology. In what way do those interests directly influence your music?

i think it all does, its me,you know? like my own little strange world..the titles of my tracks are related to what im reading, absorbing or interested in,the sounds are directly made from this.

6. If you had to pick your top 3 producers at the moment, who would they be?

id say the new guys,Calculus,Tex Perez & Hevy Mendez and Alpine..they are all new artist i am encouraging because of their raw talent, they have that elusive dancefloor meets weird thing going on.I think they will go on to very unusual oeuvres!

7. What has been the highlight of your DJ/Producer career thus far?

i would say getting to some far off places like South Africa,Australia or Hawaii has been a real perk,i always imagined visiting these places, and always am so stoked i am actually there..its like a dream.

8. I’m sure there are some big things we can expect from you coming soon. Can you share a little bit about what you have coming up in the next year?
yes indeed,we have a crazy year coming, soon on the label we launch the new acts i mentiopned above, and remixes from Mauro Picotto,Alan Fitzpatrick,Samuel L session,Shinedoe,etc.. and some stuff like Julien Chaptal,Lopazz,Alex kid,Smash TV later on too,a really big thing to arrange, but im very excited about the next while!!

9. I know you really enjoy San Francisco and try to spend as much time here as possible when you are in the States. What is it about SF that you dig so much?

i love it yeah, the city feels like love, the symbol, the people, the reaction..super clued in musically, not pretentious, and the hottest people in usa right!?!?!

10. Are you ready to rock?
i was born ready…

SIAN (Octopus Records, Barcelona, Spain)

BIOGRAPHY:

When you have interests ranging from entomology, cosmology and marine biology, to the social impact of the rave generation, you tend to make unusual art.Sian stands out as a little more bohemian than the average electronic talent.Born in Dublin,Ireland, raised in southern Spain,he chose early to drop out of normal society and engage in the extraordinary.Adhering more to the avant-garde side of club culture, his tracks show an otherworldly, slow and hypnotic slant on techno. Quickly developing an oeuvre of work that has appeared on Bedrock,Sci&Tec,Soma Pokerflat, plus his own white hot new Octopus label, his tracks have seen Beatport top ten positions and glowing reviews alike. From mags and blogs to international radio shows, his reputation for delivering huge slabs of peak time techno is snowballing.Reworked and remixed by talent like Steve Bug,Pan-Pot,Efdemin,Minilogue along the way,he has also dropped super big mixes for the likes of Guy J and Gui Boratto. Having already toured half the world, schooling heaving crowds and bringing his trademark experimental DJ-ing style to the masses via multiple outputs of explosive techno,fx and loops-all cut up and edited live,His DJ sets at international clubs and festivals in Europe,USA,Canada,Eastern Europe,South America,Australia and beyond, have seen him bring real voodoo to the dancefloor every time. Also running his own nomadic “Octopus presents” events, with guests like Josh Wink,Anja Schneider,Damian Lazarus,Nick Curly and Secretsundaze etc rolling out the emerging clubnights warehouse aesthetics in Barcelona and Dublin. His proudest undertaking yet,his own new techno imprint,Octopus recordings,is now recognized by peer and press alike as one to watch.Praised for its feverish tracks and raw sound,it has kickstarted a growing plethora of main room stompers and left field underground bombs. With remixes from esteemed names like Carlo Lio,Ramon Tapia,DVS1,Joel Mull,Terence Fixmer,Ripperton,Gui Boratto,Norman Nodge,Jonas Kopp and bright new talent like Calculus and Clement Meyer, the young imprint is already making loud noise. His upcoming artist album,an inventive hybrid mix of original tracks and parts, spanning 130 mins and comprising over 1013 individual clips mixed into one session, will show a bold step in studio experimentation. The project illustrates some achingly smart new production techniques and features everyone from Carlo Lio to Terence Fixmer, remixing the vibrant singles. Whether conducting everlasting sweat soaked DJ sessions or creating timeless dance music,Sian is a truly diverse and original talent,at once chic and debonaire, always intensely inventive.
