( ( ( ( (H O U S E P I T A L I T Y) ) ) ) ) is pleased to announce the triumphant return of New Zealand’s most famous Detroit transplant, one of the most talented DJs we’ve ever presented:
::RECLOOSE (Planet E, Rush Hour, K7, Peacefrog | New Zealand)::
With support from
::BAI-EE (Housepitality, Acid Test SF, Farris Wheel | SF/CHI)::
::JOHNNIE WALKER (Bionic | SF)::
Groove Lounge:
::TOM THUMP (Cosmic Flux, Kinkysweet | SF)::
We’ve reached the final Housepitality of April, a month in which we’ve said goodbye to some of our closest friends (Mikey Tello, Kevin Knapp, Adnan Sharif, to name a few), and so it’s finally time to switch things up, and welcome back an artist who’s been responsible for some of the most amazing parties we have ever thrown, a true DJ’s DJ, Mr. Matt Chicoine, AKA RECLOOSE.
Recloose met Housepitality founder Miguel Solari when they were students at University of Michigan, and when Recloose still went by the DJ name of Bubblicious. Matt/Recloose had become somewhat of a local legend at this time, throwing a Tuesday night weekly, and becoming known for an ambitious, dynamic approach to mixing and music programming, when he was finally discovered by Carl Craig (in an incident known as “demo on rye,” which occurred when he was working at a Detroit deli).
In the intervening years, Recloose moved to New Zealand, and though he’s been far away, geographically, his amazing technical skills, diverse music selections and productions, and drive have made him one of the most popular Detroit transplants on the house and techno scene.
Recloose first appeared for Housepitality in May of 2011. An appearance that went down in history as one of the most bangin’ nights we’ve had…. UNTIL HIS NEXT appearance, last year, at a Housepitality that happened to fall on July 4th, which brought in a record-breaking crowd, and one of the most amazing vibes we’ve ever experienced. We got the chance to book him again this year, for his third visit, and we took it; Recloose’s talents behind the decks are simply amazing, every time… he’s a living DJ lesson, and we couldn’t be happier to have him back.
Supporting Recloose, we’ve brought back Johnnie Walker for another set. Johnnie is no newcomer to the SF scene, having thrown the famous Bionic Sunday parties at the (sadly now defunct) 222 club. The first time he came to play for us, he blew us away with a diverse and powerful opening set, and we’re really excited to hear what he’ll bring this time.
After Johnnie, our CEO, tall guy, and extremely talented, Chicago-trained producer and resident DJ, Bai-ee. If you still haven’t come to see him play, you need to take this chance and get out and hear a set. Every ounce of experience learned through his many years of DJing and throwing parties, comes through in sets that are diverse, deep, and jackin’, all at once.
Finally, in the Groove Lounge, we welcome a local DJ who was raised and trained in many of the dance capitals of the US (Detroit, LA, and now finally, SF): Tom Thump. Tom is known as a svengali of genres, a true genre-blending DJ who can play to just about any crowd, and who, in fact, has played alongside artists from almost as many genres as one can name. He’s exactly the sort of DJ we require in the Groove Lounge, a place where just about any genre goes, as long as it’s groovin’, as long as it’s different, as long as it’s good. We look forward to having this expert take our back room on a journey whose destination is still unknown. Let’s Thump!

Recloose
Fourteen years after his now infamous ‘Demo on Rye’ exchange with Carl Craig in a downtown Detroit sandwich shop, Recloose has developed into a true standout of the city’s musical litter. His inventive and restless output is distinctive and diverse, melding together moody techno, soulful house, synth-heavy jazz, funk and heavy downtempo with the great of ease, and as only he knows how.
With tremendous fanfare, summer 2011 will see the much anticipated release of the first original Recloose music to emerge in three years – the ‘Saturday Night Manifesto’ EP for Rush Hour. The seminal Amsterdam based label last year outed ‘Early Works’, a spine tingling retrospective collection celebrating his best work from the late 90’s and early 00’s.
Additionally, Recloose has to date released a number of groundbreaking 12’s for Planet E and Rush Hour, a host of remixes, and four full-length albums for noteworthy labels !K7, Peacefrog, Octave Lab and Sonar Kollektiv. He has been responsible for several hit singles which remain somewhat hallowed amongst educated heads – namely ‘Cardiology’, (incidentally with a five-star remix from Isolee), ‘Dust’ featuring Joe Dukie, and ‘Can’t Take It’ featuring R’n’B sensation Dwele, later stunningly re-worked by Carl Craig.
A much in-demand DJ, Recloose spent years traversing clubs and festivals around the world, as well as performing as a turntablist for both Carl Craig’s Innerzone Orchestra and the more esoteric Uri Caine ensemble. He has spent much of his last few years recording and playing with his funk-oriented Recloose Live Band, rendering his more house oriented DJ sets a rare treat. Fans can catch him via his ‘Hit It and Quit It’ radio show aired every Monday from Auckland’s George FM (www.hititandquititradio.bl
This year Recloose resurfaces from his base in Auckland, New Zealand, to once again trail blaze the dancefloors of the US and Europe, with his recent RA Podcast giving listeners a taste of what they can expect from each of his resounding performances.
Evidently despite the name, and luckily for followers the world over, Recloose finds it impossible to stray far from the vanguard of electronic music for too long.
