Butane has been flying the underground flag, professionally, unapologetically, since 2001 when he began DJing. There are countless mechanisms ready-built into the electronic music industry which relentlessly pull one toward commercialization, aka selling-out, and he vows to resist them at all costs.
Through the years, he’s watched in disappointment as peers (sometimes understandably) succumb to the pressure, and in doing so, ultimately lose the respect of those who matter most – their colleagues and fans. Nevertheless, steadfast, through hard work, dedication, and commitment to artistry, he finds himself a pillar in the scene. This is no accident.
Owner of two exceptional record labels (Alphahouse & Little Helpers), and responsible for a sprawling and impressive discography of original work and remixes, he forges his own path. Against the odds, he believes talent, hard work, dedication to craft, attention to detail, and uncompromising belief in these core principles is the way to conduct a meaningful career in the music business. Nackt is a DJ, Producer, Lover, and Gentleman. As a co-founder of the Rare Form and Outpost parties, he is committed to bringing excellent talent to Oakland and San Francisco! Nackt grew up in the East Bay Area in California, playing jazz saxophone and collecting funk and soul records. After becoming obsessed with hip-hop in the 90’s, his extensive vinyl collection was put to good use as sample fuel in downtempo and hip-hop productions. Nackt worked the house party circuit and eventually earned a weekly residency at Oakland landmark, Ruby Room. After holding down a soul and hip-hop residency there for many years, he built on his experience with Deep East, a deep house and techno weekly party in East Oakland. He continues to DJ and promote in Oakland with the eclectic Rare Form parties, and in San Francisco with the left-field and bass-heavy party, Outpost.
Excited by the techno-influenced house and garage revival happening in the UK bass scene, Nackt plays techno, funky deep house, and forward-thinking bass music from across the globe. Depending on the time-slot, you’ll hear anything from mellow, ethereal Jacques Greene productions, banging house tunes from Bicep, left-field bass music from the Hessle Audio label, to jacking techno like Boddika. Occasionally he’ll even dust off the old 45s and do a funk and soul set! Nackt’s thorough musical knowledge makes for an eclectic set, sure to please the discerning listener with beats heavy enough to get a dance floor shaking.
Nackt has been booked for notable Bay Area parties like As You Like It, Werd, Grime City, Bubble, Direct To Earth, HGMNY, Friends and Family (FNF), Black Magic Disko, and the legendary ambient party, Chillits. Nackt’s original productions and remixes have appeared on Popgang Records, Chillin Music, and 3AM Devices, and he has shared the bill with artists like Maya Jane Coles, Hunee, Thugfucker, Dirt Crew, Martyn, DJ Hatcha, Cosmin TRG, Tessela, Kit Clayton, 40 Thieves, Splatter, Jason Kendig, Tiari, Odd Nosdam, Starkey, Jonah Sharp and more.
