( ( ( HOUSEPITALITY ) ) ) welcomes back a true artist, a groundbreaking producer whose pedigree is unquestioned, along with two of the SF underground’s best in support:
::JAMES WHAT (Modelmaker, Poker Flat | London)::
Opening set by:
::SEAN MURRAY (Housepitality | SF)::
Groove Lounge Takeover by
::JP SOUL (Roam Recordings | SF)::
Sometimes here at the Housepit we have to pinch ourselves and realize how spoiled we are…when we’ve casually got artists like James What rolling through for not even their first time, but their second time back for us (last time he didn’t even headline!).
James is an incredible talent, comfortable in both house and techno, and he’s continued to grow and develop his production talent, his DJ skills, and his labels (now bringing the Modelmaker label with mate Dan Berkson).
The opening set this time goes to our resident Sean Murray, one of the bay’s most legitimately old school rave DJs. He’s always on point and his opening sets are a special treat.
In the back, we host none other than SF’s vital, underground heart, a pro dj, record store owner, and pulse of the DJ scene here in SF: MIKE BEE. He’s the foremost purveyor of both CHUG music and vinyl dance records in SF… visit him in our back room, all around the bay, and in his record shop Vinyl Dreams… you won’t regret it.
We love you. We got you.

James What has long been making his mark on electronic music. His is a two pronged attack, the first being solo as both producer and DJ. He has played everywhere from Robot Heart at Burning Man to across both Americas, Europe and Asia, has previously hooked up with Crosstown boss Damian Lazarus as Zod and released on his other label, Rebellion. So too has his original solo work, which is a knowing concoction of gruff techno, slick minimal and classicist house aesthetics, come on labels such as Crosstown Rebels, Poker Flat and Murmur, with remixes being commissioned by Rue de Plaisance, CityFox and My Favourite Robot. Of course, James is also one half of Berkson & What, the analogue loving house and techno partnership that has won worldwide acclaim for their live shows and productions on labels like Poker Flat and Crosstown. That project is about to birth its first album, and has also given rise to new label Modelmaker, meaning this venerable talent is about to leave yet another indelible mark on the scene that he has so intrinsically been linked with ever since making his debut.

An extremely talented Housepitality resident and one of the few SF bay area originals still lurking in the underground. Raised on the SF bay area Wicked, Gathering, and Sunset parties he’s now in his prime, influencing new generations with his particular sound and style. Starting with a base of house, he has infused Detroit, Stockholm, minimal, acid, and other sounds to create a deep, almost techno soul music with focus on basslines and vocals. This is epic story-telling at its best. Come out for his opening set and get your night started off only the way Sean can.
