3/18/20 – Supervixen & Housepitality present JULIET MENDOZA of Jill’s House – LA

There is a spiritually charged underground house movement going in Los Angeles and its led by Juliet Mendoza of Jill’s House. So on Wed March 18th, we are beyond excited to team up with Evita Salazar’s Supervixen crew to bring Juliet Mendoza’s vibes to Housepitality. This is a keystone West Coast House Music building block event. We are proud to showcase her dance floor rocking talent in SF for the Wednesday party heads, no doubt!

Juliet Mendoza has unique crew of dedicated loyal fans, dozens of podcasts and release appearances on Music4Lovers and Shaboom and other published interviews. She started Jills House in K-town with her partner Megan Berardi and it’s quickly become a house music institution. How did she learn how to rocks bodies on dance floors to a frenzy? Because she started as a dancer.

Her mother was a disco singer and her dad played bass. She started dancing seriously at 13 and ran with a dance crew thru the early days of underground LA scene. After finding her parents vinyl record collection and playing her first party in 2011, she discovered he had larger superpowers beyond the dance floor and into the dj decks. Moving that crowd became her expression. All ingredients are there.

I was introduced to her by Mr. Dave Aju during the spring of 2019 during a and had very surreal and amazing dance floor experience that turned me into her fan. So, what happened? While visiting Los Angeles one weekend, our bromeo Mr. Dave Aju was relentlessly trying to get me to stay ‘another night’ to “check out this dj, trust me bro. She’s my favorite and I wouldn’t just say that” type of talk.

I mean, I take that recommendation very seriously from our bro. He also told me a story that he was booked to headline and come on after her. She tore it up so hard he admittedly felt a little nervous going up after her which was rare for an old school world renown dj/producer like Dave Aju.

So we went to Pattern Bar and as soon as I walked in it was straight up pure banging house music dripping off the walls. The place was lava. The floor was live with a diverse group of real dancers taking turns in a circle. The rest of the crowd was just lost in the jak. I couldn’t help but to notice Juliet Mendoza behind the decks just delivering the heat. I was just about to find out why she is LA’s best kept secret.

She strung together a palette of New York, Chicago and West Coast house signatures with just the right amount of vocals. It was just what the preacher man ordered with a little bit of acid lines too. Uh! yeah, it felt good to see some real house music dance floor go off in deep down town LA. The vampires were definitely not here, the music and crowd was spiritually charged, and then THIS HAPPENED:

Real Story: (brace yourself, because this one is a little supernatural. You don’t have to believe it but I am telling exactly what I experienced): This girl with incredible dance moves was in full expression in the dance circle getting love from the crowd. I was half watching her while dancing towards Juliet in the front. Suddenly she lost slight balance and tumbled towards me. She caught herself by grabbing onto my arm and accidentally pulled me out towards the middle of the dance floor. “Aw shit,” I thought. Now I’m in the middle of a mostly black and latino dance circle in DTLA with this girl. My brown Chicago/SF ass had to represent. So I started to Jak (Btw, Dave Aju has video of this moment somewhere in his phone).

Our eyes locked together and I got lost in the heat of the rhythm and the crowd started to go off. I was definitely getting down, however, the next thing I recall everything went into slow motion. I was still looking into her eyes but everything around was surreal slow. I could see camera flashes and I heard people scream in my periphery but it was like a dream. I knew I was dancing but the rest of the experience wasn’t normal, that’s all I know.

My breath finally ran out and I suddenly came out of this trance like dance state. I was right in front of her, our noses were almost touching. We both stopped dancing at the same moment and the crowd went nuts! Heads came out and gave us props. One cat was bowing towards our feet. I looked over at Juliet and she was just deep in the mix. Dave Aju was over in the corner laughing at my ass like, “whoa bro, didn’t know you had moves like that.” Neither did I. The girl pulls me near and asks, “yo, what was that? I have been dancing my whole life and I’ve never felt that before.” I said, “Me neither, that was crazy and I have no idea what just happened. I just lost track of time.”

Some portal opened and I can’t explain because it doesn’t matter. What does matter is that Juliet Mendoza was on the decks and enabled it so. That was some real dance floor magic, if I’ve ever felt any. and that is exactly what happened. It turns out the dancer is one of Juliet Mendozas best friends. She is a talented competition dancer and you can check out her moves on her insta @shantismira

Later in the summer of 2019, The Black Lodge LA booked myself with Dave Aju and Juliet Mendoza all night. The flyer had a voodoo look and frankly it made sense when it was all said and done! It was an insane mid summer night event in a deep DTLA warehouse full of spiritual vibes. I threw down a nasty set then Dave Aju joined in and then Juliet hit it out of the perimeter and heads danced til 6am. Tons of her fans came out and these heads danced for real! It turns out heads were there from all over the world in town for a competition and they all came to see her. Amazing!

These dance crews are here in the Bay Area too and they will come see her on Wednesday March 18th as she takes over the Supervixen x Housepitality dancefloor along with Brown Amy, Sinéad, and Ally AF.

Evita Salazar will be our host for the night and she crafted the rest of this line up. She was also introduced to Juliet and they had been talking on and off about bringing her up. Things always work out the way they are supposed to and I love that we get to do this with her because its been years since we’ve been talking about “working together.” Meow powers unite yo!
