At Housepitality, we try and book music that runs the gamut, from hard techno, to disco, to tech house to… well, you know the drill, but we are a crew that has the word “House” in our name, and sometimes we book a night celebrating classic house music; we have to pay our respects to those who made all this possible (and we absolutely LOVE it when we get all of the real old school house heads to come out and dance). This week is one of those nights.
Whether or not you’re aware of it, you’ve heard the voice of Dajae. The classic track featuring her vocal “Is It All Over My Face” gets stuck in my head on a weekly basis, and the Cajmere tracks “Brighter Days” and “U Got Me Up” are touchstones of house history.
On this eve, Ms. Dajae will sing live vocals on a handful of her most famous tracks. The lady is a real entertainer, and this rare live set is not to be missed by anyone who’d love to continue calling themself a house head.
Playing DJ sets, we have booked Detroit artist Stacey Hale, aka the Godmother of House, and Gene Hunt, an undisputed king of Chicago house music.
With his confident hand and wide-ranging taste in house music, CJL aka C.J. Larsen, a well-established figure in SF’s house music underground, will handle opening duties.
Last but not least, we’re opening up our back room to celebrate the birthdays of two of our good friends, Jeremy Bispo and Brie Putty. Jeremy, the founder of local party powerhouse As You Like It, has selected our Groove Lounge DJs personally, and we couldn’t be happier with his choices: Jason Kendig (Honey) and Brian Bejarano (AYLI).

Dajae
Chicago native Dajae is one of the undisputed vocal queens of house music. Appearing on the house music scene in the early nineties, she was one of the key drivers in the success of the Cajual label, linking up with renowned producer Cajmere to make classics such as ‘Brighter Days’, ‘U Got Me Up’ and ‘Is It All Over My Face?’ Dajae has constantly been in demand as a vocalist since then.
Over the years Dajae as arguably produced the finest performances of her career. The Junior Sanchez produced ‘B With U’ was the debut release on Roger Sanchez’ R-Senal label and later licensed to Manifesto Records for the UK. The E-Smoove produced ‘Time’, signed to Credence Records was closely followed by the summer anthem ‘Everyday’, a collaboration between Felix da Housecat and Junior Jack released by Defected. To top things off she teamed up with the peerless Full Intention to make ‘What Do You Want?’, the most successful release so far from Essence.
Unlike many of her peers in dance music, Dajae puts on a great show, as those at the Autumn 2001 Southport Weekender and countless others can testify.

Gene Hunt
On any given night in Chicago, it’s more likely than not that Gene Hunt is somewhere, crouched over the decks and working his magic. One of the true representatives of Chicago House Music, Gene is one of the top artists to emerge from the city, with a career spanning back to the initial wave in the early 1980s. As a teenager, he played at many of the key touchstones of the first generation of House Music spots, including the Warehouse, The Playground and The Music Box; he’s been best known in the last few years for a series of tracks made then with the legendary Ron Hardy.
As a producer, Gene Hunt’s first EP was Living in a Land, released on Chicago’s Trax Records and co-produced and shepherded by Armando Gallop. From an early age, Gene imprinted his stamp on his musical style with an alteration between soulful, vocal recordings and harder, rough tech-y tracks. (And sometimes both in the same release – see, for instance, “Twilight People” featuring Robert Owens on vocals). By 1999 he had more than enough releases on his belt for a “Greatest Hits” double LP (Gene Hunt Classics, Dust Traxx).
In the years following, Gene Hunt released some of his best records on labels including Dope Wax, Track Mode, Got Soul and Unified, and delivered a tour de force in 2011 when noted Dutch label Rush Hour released Gene Hunt Presents Chicago Dance Tracks, a collection of some sixteen unreleased records from the likes of Larry Heard & Marshall Jefferson, Steve “Silk” Hurley, Farley Jackmaster Funk, Lil Louis and Ron Hardy. As a follow up, in early 2012 Gene released an original two track EP, May The Funk Be With You, also on Rush Hour, with a remix from Theo Parrish. (written by Terry Matthew)
